Each day, these courageous men and women put their lives on the line, and we would like to thank them and their families for their commitment.
September 11, 2001, inspired many young men and women to join the military and defend our country in the War on Terror including SSG Christopher J. Birdwell. Chris joined the U.S. Army in March 2006, shortly after high school graduation, and was deployed for the first time to Afghanistan in August of that year immediately after graduating from boot camp. Chris faced two additional deployments to Afghanistan, the second in 2009 and the last in 2012. 2012 was the year to hand over the lead to the Afghan National Army (ANA) while the U.S. continued its support. It was also the year for the highest insider “Blue-on-Green” attacks.
On August 27, Chris’s unit left in the early hours of the morning on a route clearance mission to close one of their Forward Operating Bases (FOB). At approximately 7 am, one of the vehicles in their convoy was damaged by an IED explosion. The convoy halted and stopped all traffic in both directions to allow Chris and a few others to sweep and secure the area. An ANA convoy vehicle was allowed through and stopped short of the damaged vehicle. After speaking with the Afghan clip commander about their damaged vehicle, the gunner on the ANA convoy opened fire on Chris and SPC Mabry Anders. There was no chance for them to defend themselves from the unexpected gunfire. Chris and SPC Mabry Anders gave the ultimate sacrifice serving our country and will forever be our heroes.
Both soldiers were awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After meeting SPC Anders' family, we found that both men shared common interests and personalities, including the uncanny ability to make people laugh and lift their spirits.
Behind the uniform, Chris was a man whose infectious laugh could make anyone smile; he was a generous friend and a servant of many. His vivacity for life was evident in his fondness for speed. Chris enjoyed everything from fast cars, motorcycles, and ATVs to skydiving and shooting sports. Ever a thrill-seeker, he loved snow and cold weather and enjoyed snowboarding, snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities. His talent for enjoying life touched everyone who knew him.
Several memorials and tributes have been set up on Chris’s behalf. The Colorado State Senate and House unanimously passed a resolution in May 2013 to name a portion of Highway 34 in the Windsor/Loveland area as the “SSG Christopher J. Birdwell Memorial Highway.” The Town of Windsor has planted a tree and installed a bench and plaque along the Poudre River Trail. The Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado has a Liberty tree (#83 – located behind the military emblems) at Spring Canyon Park in Fort Collins dedicated in Chris’s honor and lists fallen heroes on their outdoor monitors. Highlands Ranch Veteran’s Memorial Park also has a dedication tile placed on one of their towers. The Marine Hotel in San Francisco has a wall bearing the names of fallen heroes. Sappers Grove at Fort Leonard Wood, MO also has massive dedication stones honoring fallen Army sappers/engineers. Fort Carson has also inscribed the names of fallen soldiers just outside Gate One on flagstone memorials and Chris’s company dedicated their readiness room on post to both Chris and Mabry in November 2013.
